Ottawa Chapter

Here, we welcome silent readers, to gather in person to read in

quiet camaraderie, and to share

a bookish moment or two.

The Ottawa Chapter of the Silent Book Club acknowledges that we work, play and meet in Odawa (Ottawa), uninvited, on the unceded, unsurrendered territory of the Anishnaabe Algonquin Nation, whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial.

We acknowledge too, that the Algonquins do not walk among us, but we, among them. We recognize their long history of welcoming many nations to this land.

We acknowledge the long historical oppression of this land’s people, cultures and languages, and how it continues today. This chapter of SBC respects and affirms the inherent Treaty Rights of all Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island (Canada).

Through the promotion of reading, through raising awareness about literature and all of the arts, to the best of our ability as we learn, we will honour, uphold and help lift up the voice and values of our host nation, and contribute to the healing and decolonizing journey we all share together.

How does it work?

Readers gather and after a taking a bit of time to say hello and order fare and libations, we get down to reading for about an hour. Afterwards, everyone is welcome to wrap up and head home, or stick around for more camaraderie.

Silent Book Club is about community.

Bring what you're reading.

Come, ready to engage with other introverts for a moment or two, long enough to soak up the opportunity of reading together.
